Air pollution is caused by many things, Great clouds of smoke come from factories.  Cars sendsmoke and fumes into the air.  Burning waste fills the air with bits of dirt.  Even burning leaves addsmoke tothe air.  Sometimes, planes cannot find their landing spots through smoke.  Smoke of allkinds" is bad to breathe and can do great harm to the body.

Still, we cannot live without air.  We must find a way to clean the air we have,

In time, we may have factories that are run by atomic energy.  Our cars may run on smoke-freeelectric power.  Scientists are also working on new ways to help the oil burned by cars from makingfumes.  Waste may be burned ,in the sand on ocean floors.

Do you think there is too much noise in our city? If you live near an airport, you will be unhap-py because a plane often makes a loud noise.  The sound of planes or heavy vehicles is likely tocause deafness if heard continuously.

However, most people in our city do not seem to mind noise.  They like to enjoy music whenthey are doing uninteresting jobs.  It is a new danger because pop music, when played through pow-erful amplifiers, can reach 120 decibels at a distance of five feet.  A continuous noise of over $5 dec-ibels can cause deafness.  It was discovered that many young people in America could hear no betterthan 65-year-old people.

In the past we used to think that only workers in very noisy places would become deaf.  For ex-ample, when newspapers and books are being printed, the noise level is over 85 decibels, and someof the workers become deaf.  Today, however, scientists believe that l0 percent of the workers inBritain are being deafened by the noise.

Sometimes noise of less than 85 decibels can make some people tired and stressed.  We all knowthat too much noise makes life difficult and unpleasant.  It can do great harm to people's health andprevent people from working well.  Workers in noisy offices are not as efficient as those in quiet of-rices.  Noise makes people less efficient.  Can anything be done to reduce or control noise?

In Britain the government has made several laws to reduce noise.  Though the government hasspent a lot of money in making airports and main roads quieter, many people think that there are still not enough laws.  For example, there are no laws to control the noise of machines.  In Japan, Ameri-ca and Norway there are such laws.  As a result, workers can be given compensation if they becomedeaf.

Some people make you feel comfortable when they are around.  You spend an hour with themand feel as if you have known them half your life.  These people have something in common.  Andonce we know what it is, we can try to do it ourselves.

How is it done? Here are several skills that good talkers have.  If you follow the skills, they'll help you put people at their ease, and make friends with them quickly.

First of all, good talkers ask questions.  Almost anyone, no matter how shy he is, will answer aquestion.  One well-known businesswoman says, " At business lunches, I always ask people whatthey did that morning.  It's a common question, but it will get things going.  " From there you canmove on to other matters--sometimes to really personal questions.  And how he answers will let youknow how far you can go.

Second, once good talkers have asked questions, they listen to the answers.  This point seemsclear, but it isn't.  Your questions should have a point and help to tell what sort of person you aretalking to.  And to find out, you really have to listen carefully and attentively.

Real listening at least means some things.  First it means not to change the subject of conversa-tion.  If someone sticks to one topic, you can take it as a fact that he's really interested in it.  Reallistening also means not just listening to words, but to tones of voice.  If the voice sounds dull, then,it's time for you to change the subject.

Finally, good talkers know well how to deal with the occasion of parting.  If you're saying good-bye, you may give him a firm handshake and say, "I've really enjoyed meeting you.  " If you want tosee that person again, don't keep it a secret.  Let people know what you feel, and they may walk a-way feeling as if they've known you half their life.

64. Asking questions might be a quite good and suitable way

Afor you to make more and more new friends

Bto begin your business talks

Cto get the conversation going smoothly

Dfor you to make a deep and lasting impression on others

65. After having asked somebody a question, it'll be polite of you to

Amake clear what kind of person he is

Blisten to his reply attentively

Cwait quietly and patiently for his answer

Dgo on asking him more questions

66. Generally speaking, good talkers are persons who

Aare good at making any topic interesting

Bnever talk too much or too little

Calways speak in a gentle way

Dknow how and when they should change the topic of the talk

Have you had a headache during a test? Have you ever been so worried about something thatyou have a headache or even can't sleep at night? If so, then you know what stress is.  Stress is whatyou feel when you are worried about something.  This worry in your mind can make your body feelbad.  You may feel angry, sad, scared, or afraid--all of which can give you a stomachache or aheadache.

However, there are different kinds of stress.  Some kinds of stress are good and others are bad. Good stress might happen when you're called to answer questions in class or when you have to give aspeech.  This kind of stress can help you to get things better done.  For example, you may do a betterjob on your test if the stress pushes you to prepare better before the test.

On the other hand, bad stress can happen if stress lasts too long.  You may not feel well if yourparents are fighting, if a family member is sick, if you're having problems at school, or if anythingelse makes you unhappy every day.  That kind of stress isn't going to help you.  And it can actually make you sick.

The best way to fight stress is to have a balanced life, Make sure you keep your SELF in mind:Sleep, Exercise, Leisure(休闲), and Food.  If you get enough sleep and eat properly, and if youexercise and leave time for fun, you'll probably feel less stressed.
